About York Park

York Park is a sports ground in the Inveresk and York Park Precinct, Launceston, Australia. Holding 19,500 people - the joint largest capacity stadium in Tasmania - York Park is known commercially as the University of Tasmania Stadium and was formerly known as Aurora Stadium under a previous contract naming rights signed with Aurora Energy in 2004. Primarily used for Australian Rules Football, its attendance record of 20,971 was established in June 2006, when Hawthorn Football Club played Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) game. The area swampland before becoming Launceston Showgrounds 1873. During the following decades, the reasons were all used for sports, including cricket, bowls and tennis. In 1919 plans were prepared for the transformation of the area into a multi-sport events. From 1923, the site was mainly used for Australian football through the Northern Tasmanian Football Association, and the temporary intergovernmental games. Visit Mainland football clubs regularly played mid-season and end-of-season matches on the ground. Other sports such as cricket, tennis, bowling, cycling and foot-racing has been in place. Hawthorn has played between two and five AFL matches each season since 2001, and the St Kilda Football Club played two matches per year between 2003 and 2006. In 2007, the Tasmanian Government signed a $ 16.4 million, five-year sponsorship deal with Hawthorn during which the club will play four regular season games and the National Australia Bank Cup pre-season match on location each year. Throughout its history, the York Park hosts major pop concerts and other entertainment. Since 2001, there has been a venue for international sporting events, and in 2005 was redeveloped at a cost of $ 23.6 million.
