About Wyangala

Town in New South Wales, Australia

Wyangala is a small village in the Lachlan Valley, near the intersection of Abercrombie and Lachlan Rivers, just below Wyangala Dam wall. It is in the South West Slopes, New South Wales, Australia, and about 320 km (200 mi) west of the state capital, Sydney. The village was named after a native word of unknown meaning, thought to be the Wiradjuri origin. The Wiradjuri were the original inhabitants of the Lachlan Valley, with the campsites along the river flats, on open land and rivers. Their traditional way of life changed, and perhaps lost, after the exploration of the Valley of British discovered, John Oxley and George William Evans 1815 White Settlement followed in the 1830s, which led to violent clashes between Wiradjuri and settlers. Today's village was founded in 1928, during the construction of Wyangala Dam. But in the same area, there was a widespread pioneer settlement called Wyangala Flats, which was established in the 1840s. This settlement submerged under water after the completion of Wyangala Dam in 1935. Even Wyangala grew strongly during periods of dam construction, the population declined in the following years. This resulted in the removal of houses and closure of most businesses leaving Wyangala with a small primary school, a Catholic church, sports fields and parks, along with other facilities. There are no buildings of historical note, because the original purpose of the village was merely utilitarian provide accommodation for construction workers. Local attractions include Lake Wyangala (used for electricity, water sports and fishing), a golf course with nine holes, walking and mountain biking trails and 1.37 km (0.85 mi) long dam itself. Wyangala has a warm, temperate climate with a variety of native and exotic plants and animals, including threatened and endangered species. Flora, fauna and village inhabitants occupies a hilly landscape dominated by granite, with large rocks and boulders in the area. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
