Wollongong (WUUL-ən-gong), informally known as "The Gong", is a coastal city located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Wollongong lies on the narrow coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific, 68 kilometers (42 miles) south of central Sydney. Wollongong had an estimated metropolitan population of 302,739 in June 2018, making it the third largest city in New South Wales after Sydney and Newcastle, and the tenth largest city in Australia. The city's current mayor is Gordon Bradbery AM chosen 2018th The Wollongong metropolitan area extends from Helensburgh in the north of Shell Cove in the south. It sits in Wollongong Statistical District, which covers municipalities in Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama, stretching from the town of Helensburgh in the north to Gerroa in the south Geologically, the town is located in the southeastern part of the Sydney basin, which stretches from Newcastle to Nowra.Wollongong noted for its heavy industry, its port activity and the quality of the physical environment, which occupies a narrow coastal plain between an almost continuous chain of surfing beaches and cliff line of the rainforest-covered Illawarra escarpment. It has two cathedrals, churches and many denominations Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. Wollongong has a long history of coal mining and industry. The city attracts many tourists every year and is a regional center for South Coast fishing industry. University of Wollongong has around 37,000 students and is internationally recognised.The name "Wollongong" is thought to mean "sea of the South" in the local Aboriginal language Tharawal, with reference to the NSW south coast.
