Whyalla was founded as "Hummocks Hill", and was known by that name until 1916. It is the fifth most populous city in the Australian state of South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Gawler and Mount Barker. As of June 2018 Whyalla had an urban population of 21,742, after having declined by an average annual growth rate of -0.75% from year to year over the past five years. It is a port city located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula and is known as "Steel City" because of its integrated steel mills and shipbuilding heritage.
