Vagharshapat (Armenian: Վաղարշապատ pronounced [vɑʁɑɾʃɑpɑt]) is the 4th largest city in Armenia and populous local community Armavir, located about 18 km (11 mi) west of the capital Yerevan, and 10 km (6 mi) north of the closed Turkish -armeniska limit. It is commonly known as Ejmiatsin (also spelled Echmiadzin or Etchmiadzin, Էջմիածին, pronounced [ɛt͡ʃʰmjɑt͡sin]), which was its official name between 1945 and 1995. It is still common in everyday speech and official bureaucracy.The city is best known as the location of Etchmiadzin Cathedral and the Mother See Holy Etchmiadzin, the center of the Armenian apostolic Church. Thus, it is unofficially known in Western sources as a "holy city" and in Armenia as the country's "spiritual capital" (հոգեւոր մայրաքաղաք). It was one of the major cities and the capital of the old Greater Armenia. Reduced to a small town of the early 20th century, it experienced great expansion in the Soviet period becomes effective, a suburb of Yerevan. Transportation in Vagharshapat

Vagharshapat connected to Yerevan and southern Armenia through the motorway M-5, M-3 while highway connects it with the northern Armenia. The Zvartnots international airport in Yerevan is only 10 km (6 miles) east of vagharshapat. 20 km west of the capital Yerevan, is vagharshapat connection with the capital of public vans, locally known as marshrutka. These vehicles are mainly Russian-made Gazelle vans with 13 seats, which operate regularly between the two cities throughout the day. Since 2018 no new buses also have regular trips to Yerevan. There are also two smart stops in the city that will soon be eight.
