Teatro Colón (Spanish: Columbus Theater) is the main opera house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is considered one of the ten best opera houses in the world by National Geographic, and acoustically considered among the five best concert venues in the world.The current Colón replaced an original theater, which opened in 1857. At the end of the century it became clear that a new theater was needed and after a 20-year process, this theater opened May 25, 1908 with Giuseppe Verdi's Aïda. Colon Theater attended by the leading singers and opera companies of the time, which would sometimes go to other cities, including Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. After this period of great international success, became the theater's decline clearly and plans were made for massive renovations. After an initial start of the work to restore the landmark in 2005 the theater closed for renovation from October 2006 to May 2010.
