Tallarook is a city in central Victoria, Australia. The town is in the Shire of Mitchell Local Government Area and on the Hume Highway, 88 kilometers (55 mi) north of the state capital, Melbourne. In the census of 2011, Tallarook had a population of 789.Tallarook Post Office opened 1 April 1861.The city is famous in Australia for the colloquialism, "Things are crook in Tallarook," which is believed to date to the Great Depression and unemployment travelers who are looking for work. The phrase became the basis for a song composed by Jack O'Hagan-things are Crook in Tallarook.The main northeastern railway opened by the city in 1872, together with the local railway station and a branch railway to Mansfield was founded in 1883, expanded to Mansfield in 1891, and Alexandra in 1909, before it closed november 18 1978.Tallarook came to public attention in 1880 with the discovery of a recluse living in the areas nearby. Dubbed A Wildman at Tallarook was emigrant Henricke Nelsen was arrested and imprisoned, causing quite a sensation in the region. He is the subject of a 2008 book by Robert Hollingworth. Although this book fictionalizes Nelsen life, much of the region's early history is also described. The city is home to a cricket club competes in Seymour District Cricket Association.
