Shkodër or Shkodra (Albania pronunciation: [ʃkɔdəɾ]; Italian pronunciation: [Scutari]), historically known as Scutari or Scodra, is a city of Albania. It is the capital of the surrounding counties Shkodra, one of the 12 constituent counties of the Republic. The city is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans and the fourth most populous city in the country and exert strong influences in culture, religion, arts and entertainment in northern Albania. Geographically sprawls the city of Shkodra over Mbishkodra plain between freshwater wetlands in Lake Shkodra and at the foot of the Albanian Alps. Like most of the Dinaric Alps, the mountains are dominated by limestone and dolomite rocks. The lake, named after the city of Shkodra, is the largest lake in southern Europe near the Adriatic Sea. The city is surrounded on three sides by rivers Kir, in the east, in Drin and Buna south west. The region today is equivalent to the city's territory was established in the 4th century BC by the ancient Illyrian tribes ardiaei and Labeates. It is clear from the artifacts and inscriptions discovered in Rozafa. During that time the city was known as Scodra. The city has historically developed on a 130 meters (430 feet) hill, strategically placed in the outflow of Lake Shkodra in Buna. The Romans annexed the city after the third Illyrian war in 168 BC, when Gentius defeated by the Roman power Anicius Gallus. In the 3rd century, it became the capital of Shkodra Praevalitana because of the administrative reform of the Roman emperor Diocletian. With the spread of Christianity in the 4th century, the Archdiocese Scodra founded and adopted in 535 by the Byzantine Justinian I. For many different eras, it has retained its status as a major city in the region as a whole, because of its strategic location near the Adriatic Sea and the Italian port cities, but also highways to other major cities in neighboring regions. ....
