Town in Río Negro, Argentina
San Antonio Oeste is a port city in the Argentine province of Río Negro, and head of the department of San Antonio. The town bordered by its sister communities in San Antonio Este, east and Las Grutas, in the southwest. Discovery of an expedition of the Spanish Empire in 1779, the San Matías Gulf became the site of an outpost, San Antonio (so named after St. Anthony of Padua). Water shortages led the original settlement fail in 1905, which led society to settle west of the bay, in what is now the San Antonio Oeste. The arrival of the Southern Railway Buenos Aires Great in its expansion towards Bariloche in 1910 led to the village of growth. It later became the site of Punta Verde, the leading port for large wool export industry in Patagonia, although the collapse of the wool market in the 1930s and 1940s led to the port closure in 1944. San Antonio Oeste benefited afterwards from the growth of tourism in nearby Las Grutas, a scenic cove known for its caves. Since 2000, it has also been home to a growing fishing industry as a result of the opening of a deep-water port of San Antonio Este. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
