Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton region Central Queensland, Australia. The population of Rockhampton in June 2018 was 78,592, making it the fourth largest city in the state outside the cities in southeast Queensland and 22 largest city in Australia. Rockhampton is one of the oldest towns in Queensland and in northern Australia. In 1853, Charles and William Archer came across what is now known as the Fitzroy River, which they named after Sir Charles FitzRoy. Archer brothers took up a run near Gracemere in 1855, and more settlers arrived soon after, attracted by the fertile valleys. The city Rockhampton proclaimed in 1858, and monitored by Arthur F Wood Francis and Clarke, the selected street construction similar to Hoddle Grid Melbourne and consisted of a grid of wide boulevard and laneways, which was unusual in Queensland. Rockhampton is an important hub in Central Queensland region. Rockhampton provides important transport links between the Central Highlands and the Capricorn Coast regions and the areas north and south of the state.
