About Rada Tilly

Town in Chubut, Argentina

Rada Tilly is a city in Escalante Department, Chubut (Patagonia), Argentina. The city is located between Punta Piedras hill to the north and Punta del Marqués in the south. Punta Marquis, a geographical landmark at the San Jorge Gulf, reaching a height of 167 meters (548 feet), and extends into the sea below 1.5 kilometers (0.93 ml). The area was first inhabited at least 9,000 years ago, and was first recorded by Captain Robert FitzRoy during his trip on HMS Beagle in the early 1830s (best known for his influence on naturalist Charles Darwin). The municipality was formed July 24, 1948 as part of a nature conservation efforts in the area during the administration of President Juan Peron. It was named for the Marquis Francisco Everardo Tilly y Paredes, a captain of the Spanish Armada defeated Portuguese forces in the Rio de la Plata, 1795; Line is the "anchor" and even "inlet" in Spanish. The municipality is home to a growing population, which reached 6208 in 2001 census, and has doubled every decade since 1980; its estimated population, by the provincial Bureau of Statistics, was 9226 in 2008. A beach resort town, Rada Tilly became one of the most important recreational places for visitors from nearby Comodoro Rivadavia, a town 13 km (8.1 mi) to the north. Many people who live mainly in Comodoro Rivadavia also owns homes in Rada Tilly. These homes serve the purpose of a lake home or a home for many residents; which provides an escape from the hectic city life in El Centro in Comodoro. The main attraction of the town is its coastline, which stretches for 4.5 kilometers (2.8 mi), covered in fine sand. This uninterrupted geographical feature makes it possible to enjoy many leisure activities such as soccer, volleyball, and walking, as well as windsurfing, kite surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, motocross and mountain biking. Sailing (three-wheeled trolleys with sail attached to them move with the force of the wind) is a popular spectator sport in Rada Tilly and 2008 Sailing VM maintained these beaches. Rada Tilly is one of the longest Seabee seawalls in the world, comparable to that of Blackpool South Shore [UK], but includes smaller units. The beach is very flat and very wide at low tide. It is also quite dynamic, with back beach height varying by as much as 3 m, depending on the season [derived from images on Panoramio]. The production technology developed by Corporacion Tecnologica Argentina produced over 500 units per shift.
