Potrerillos Dam is located on the River Mendoza, Argentina Potrerillos Valley. The dam was built between 1999 and 2003 by a consortium consisting of Industrias METALURGICAS Pescarmona (IMPSA) and Cartellone to provide flood control, hydroelectric power and irrigation water. The dam cost US $ 312 million to build. Located some 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Mendoza, the concrete-faced rockfill dam 116 meters (381 feet) high and 395 meters (1,296 feet) long, seizure of 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) long Potrerillos Reservoir.The dam and reservoir have lost significant storage capacity due to the high silt content in the Mendoza River. When the reservoir was first filled in 2003, the capacity was estimated at 627,000 cubic decametres (508,000 acre⋅ft), with a total area of 1,500 hectares (3,700 acres). This has since been reduced to 420,000 dam3 (340,000 acre⋅ft) with a surface area of 1300 hectares (3200 acres). The reduction in capacity has threatened flooding ability pond, with concern that the emergency spillway may be insufficient to pass the high flood flows that the container loses its ability to hold them. ....
