Port Douglas is a coastal city and town in the Shire of Douglas, Queensland, about 70 km (40 mi) north of Cairns. In the 2016 census, Port Douglas had a population of 3,504 people. The city's population can often double, but with the influx of tourists during the peak tourist season from May to September. The city is named after a former Premier of Queensland, John Douglas. Port Douglas quickly developed based on the mining industry. Other parts of the area were established with timber cutting takes place in the area around the Daintree River and the settlement starts to occur at many around the Mossman River with 1880th Previous names for the city include Terrigal, Island Point, Port Owen and Salisbury. The city is located adjacent to two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
