About MV Nimbin

The Nimbin was a steel screw steamer built in 1927 in Copenhagen, which was the first motor vessel located in the coastal trade, New South Wales. It is owned and operated by the North Coast Steam Navigation Company, was the first Australian registered merchant ships lost during World War II when it hit a mine of the German aid cruiser Pinguin. The Nimbin was coming from Coffs Harbor to its home port of Sydney, with a cargo of supplied three layers of wood and a load of pigs. A third of the ship was blown away and it sank in three minutes. Seven men were killed. The remaining thirteen clung to the stacks of plywood. A few hours later, an air force plane from RAAF Base Rathmines saw survivors and directed Coaster SS Bonalbo to the site to retrieve them. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
