The Mulwala Canal is an irrigation canal in the southern Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is the largest irrigation canals in the southern hemisphere. The canal begins at Lake Mulwala, divert water from the Murray River on the southern Riverina plain to Edward River in Deniliquin. The channel has a withdrawal of 10,000 megalitres (ML) per day and per year delivers over a million ML to 700,000 hectares (1.7 million acres) in Murray Irrigation area.The canal was built between 1935 and 1942.As well as water for agriculture, the Canal also provides water to the southern cities of Riverina Berrigan, Finley, Bunnaloo and Wakool.Pacific Hydro power the Drop Hydro hydroelectric plant on the canal, close to Berrigan. The power plant, with a production capacity of 2.5 MW of electricity, is Australia's first hydropower plant on an irrigation channel. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
