Moschendorf (Hungarian: Nagysároslak, Német-Sároslak) is a city in district of Güssing in the Austrian province of Burgenland. The place was originally known as "Lak" or habitation, dwelling as far back as the 13th century. In 1482, it became Saroslak essentially means swampy abode. The name Moschendorf first appeared sometime in the 17th century when it was first documented as Mos, Moos, or in English Moor. Mos-chen-Dorf likely used to indicate its nature as a habitation or housing within a small peat bog or marsh. The initial landlords in Moschendorf was Batthyány in Güssing, and then in the 17th century they ruled from Körmend. The 17th century was a difficult time for many in Moschendorf. It is during this time that the population was reduced to two-thirds its original size due to war, plague and sometimes flooding from the nearby river, pee.
