McCrae Homestead is a historic property located in McCrae, Victoria, Australia. It was built at the foot of Arthur's Seat, a small mountain, near the shores of Port Phillip in 1844 by Andrew McCrae, a lawyer and his wife Georgiana McCrae Huntly, a portrait artist of note. The farm is under the care of the National Trust of Australia, and is open to the public. Volunteers who are knowledgeable about the history of the house conduct tours and answer questions. One of Victoria's oldest farms, it shows how the early pioneers used what they found locally to build houses and farms using primitive building techniques. The walls of the house are made of horizontal drop flat cut from local timber including Stringybark from the top of the mountain. Tuck, who was employed by McCrae and assisted by the older boys in the family, used wattle and daub, tree bark, crony shingles and sods as well as plates and square logs. Georgiana designed house and every detail as Count Rumford fireplace. The three thousand bricks needed to build it was sent down the bay from Williamstown to Arthurs Seat on Jemima, a small sailboat. The house is small but well thought out with a separate kitchen that was common at the time to prevent fires. A plan drafted by Georgiana 1850 accurately reflects the current layout of the yard with a small addition that is made on the side of the house in the 20th century. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
