Mariazell is an Austrian city located in the southeastern province of Styria. Known for being a hub for winter sports, 143 km (89 miles) north of Graz. It is picturesquely situated in the valley of the Salza, amid the north Styrian Alps. It is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from Austria and neighboring countries. The purpose of reverence is a picture of the Virgin Mary is said to work wonders, carved in linden wood. This came to the place in 1157, and is now enshrined in a chapel adorned with articles of silver and other expensive materials. The large church chapel includes built in 1644 as an extension of a smaller church built by Louis I, king of Hungary, after a victory over the Ottoman Empire in the 1363rd .... Mariazell B is on highway 20 which goes from St. Pölten over Seebergsattel to Kapfenberg im Mürz Valley. There is a connection through the Salza Valley to the east either over Gscheid St. Aegyd am Neuwalde into Piesting Valley und then further into the wiener Basin (B 21) or Lahnsattel into Mürz Valley and on to Mürzzuschlag (B 23). Mariazell is also the southern end point Mariazell railway, a narrow gauge electric railway from St. Pölten. But the terminus of the line at Mariazell station is about 1 km (0.6 mi) north of the center of the municipal territory of St. Sebastian. The station is also the terminus of Museumstramway Mariazell Erlaufsee, a standard gauge heritage steam tramway that works to the nearby Erlaufsee.Mariazell Airport is a private use airport located 2 kilometers (1 mi) north-northwest of Mariazell.
