About Mandurah

City in Western Australia

Mandurah () is a coastal town in the Australian state of Western Australia, located approximately 72 kilometers (45 mi) south of the state capital, Perth. It is the state's second largest city with a population of about 97 000, for the near Bunbury. Mandurah's central business district is on the Mandurah Estuary, which is an outlet of the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary. The town's name comes from a Noongar word meaning "meeting place" or "marketplace". A townsite Mandurah was built in 1831, two years after the establishment of the Swan River Colony, but attracted few residents. Until the post-war boom in the 1950s and 1960s, it was little more than a small fishing village. In the following years, Mandurah reputation for boating and fishing attracted many retirees, especially channel development in the city's south. 1000 hectares suburb Halls Head was developed in the 1980s by Parry Corporation and state government employees Superannuation Board of the infamous WA Inc offers that later gave rise to a royal commission.Along with four other municipal areas (Boddington, Murray, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Waroona), the City of Mandurah part of the broader Peel region. Mandurah sometimes grouped together in Perth for statistical purposes, especially as an extension of the Kwinana Freeway and the completion of Mandurah railway in the late 2000s. The two towns are now a metropolitan region along the Indian Ocean coast, although the Perth metropolitan area officially ends on Singleton. Transportation in Mandurah

Highway 1 intersects the city of Mandurah Mandurah Road towards Fremantle and Old Coast Road towards Bunbury. Meanwhile, Pinjarra and Gordon / Lakes Roads act as major east-west corridors of the northern part of the city. The Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway also provides a rural bypass for the town. Mandjoogoordap Drive (formerly Mandurah Entrance Road) also provides a direct link from the Kwinana Freeway. The Mandurah railway line opened in December 2007, links Mandurah to Perth, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes. Public transport in Mandurah provided by Trans Perth, because of its proximity to Perth himself, with eleven bus routes serving the city. Mandurah is also a stop on Transwa bus services between Perth and the South West. The Mandurah Estuary Bridge was built between 1985 and 1986, and was the first incrementally launched bridge box girder in Australia. The Dawesville Channel (also known as Dawesville Cut), a large artificial canal, opened in April 1994. It was created to allow the salty sea water from the Indian Ocean to flush the Peel Inlet, to deal with the presence of algae bloom that had plagued the mouth during many years.
