Latrobe Valley is a single geographical area and the locality in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The traditional owners are Brayakaulung of Gunai nation. District is east of Melbourne and nestled between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and Baw Baw Ranges, part of the Great Dividing Range, to the north. Mount Baw Baw (1567 m (5141 ft)) is the highest peak to the north of the Latrobe Valley, due north of Moe. The highest peak in the south is Mt Tassie (740 m (2430 ft)), south of Traralgon. The area has three major centers, from west to east, Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, with smaller centers including Churchill, Yinnar, Glengarry and Tyers. The population in the Latrobe Valley is about 125,000. The valley draws its name from the Latrobe River flowing eastward through the valley. According to Les Blake, 1841 William Adams Brodribb, an early settler, named the river in honor of Charles La Trobe, deputy governor of Port Phillip district. A. W. Reed also writes Brodribb naming the river in honor of La Trobe; but Reed claims that the river was discovered by Angus McMillan in 1840 who named the river as Glengarry River. .... Transportation in Latrobe Valley

Princes Freeway runs through the Latrobe Valley, past most of the major rural towns and connect the region to both Melbourne and East Gippsland. The centrally located center Moe is about 1 hour and 30 minute drive from the central business district of Melbourne. V / Line operates a rail link from metropolitan Melbourne to the Latrobe Valley and also operates services passing through the Latrobe Valley to East Gippsland. Some train services run limited express to the Latrobe Valley - stopping in the major population centers in Warragul, Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. Other services - including Gippslander rail traffic - stops at all stations in the area. Services Latrobe Valley runs between Melbourne and Traralgon, Gippsland while services run between Melbourne and Bairnsdale. Latrobe Valley / Gippsland Line is connected to metropolitan Melbourne Pakenham line. Latrobe Valley bus lines operated by Valley Transit, which runs connecting bus service in Latrobe Valley area between Moe and Traralgon - which consists of the city services that run between Moe and Traralgon to nearby cities like Morwell, Churchill and Yallourn North - and connecting city services running in every major center. Latrobe Valley Airport (IATA: LTB, ICAO YLTV) is located in the Latrobe Valley, about two hours east of Melbourne, off the Princes Highway, on the west side of Traralgon.
