Kapan (Armenia: Կապան) is a city in southeastern Armenia, which serves as the administrative center of the urban community Kapan Syunik Province as well as the provincial capital. It is located in the valley of Voghji River and is located on the northern slopes of Mount Khustup 'err. According to the census in 2011 the population of Kapan was 43,190, a slight decline from 45,711 in the census of 2001. However, the current population of the city around 34 600 per 2016 official estimate. Kapan is the most populous city in the Syunik Province as well as the entire region of southern Armenia. Transportation in Kapan

M-2 road connecting the capital Yerevan southern Armenia, the Iranian border and Artsakh Republic, passes through the cap. In late 2008, the road between Kapan and Meghri on the Iranian border rebuilt. However, the Kapan-Kovsakan-Mijnavan railway currently inactive. Before the Nagorno-Karabakh war, the nearby former airport accommodated Yak-40 and AN-14 cargo aircraft. In February 2017 the Governor of Syunik Province, Vahe Hakobyan, announced that the airport would be a modern airport serving the city of Kapan and southern Armenia and 6 June a test landing was carried out at the airport by the governor on board. Under the plan, the reconstruction of Kapan Airport is expected to be completed in 2018, with an estimated cost of US $ 2,000,000. In February 2020 the airport reconstruction was near completion and it is expected to open May in 2020.
