Ijevan (Armenia: Իջեւան), is a city and urban municipal society in Armenia serves as the administrative center of Tavush Province. It is located in the center of the region, at the foot of Ijevan ridge Gugark mountains, on the shores of Aghstev River. As of the census of 2011, the population of the city was 21,081, making it the most populated city in the province. As of 2016 official estimates, the population of Ijevan around 20,700. Ijevan is situated on a road distance of 137 km northeast of Yerevan. Yerevan-Tbilisi highway pass Ijevan. Ijevan is connected to the capital Yerevan and the rest of Armenian territories through M-4 highway. The highway passes through the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the northeastern part of the city. Domestically, the Ijevan connection with the surrounding towns and villages in Tavush Province through a network of regional roads. The city used to have a railway station was opened in the late 19's. It was an important hub between Erivan and Ganja, Azerbaijan in the Russian Empire. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the station was then closed without train service up to the day.
