Penalty transportation ended in 1850, after which the city experienced periods of growth and decline. The early 20th century saw an economic boom on the back of mining, agriculture and other primary industries, and the loss of men who served in World Wars offset by an inflow of immigration. Despite the increased migration from Asia and other non-English speaking regions Hobart's population remains predominantly ethnic Anglo-Celtic and has the highest percentage of Australian-born residents among Australia's capital cities.Today, Hobart is the financial and administrative hub of Tasmania, serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations and acts as a tourist destination, with over 1.192 million visitors in 2011-12. The tracks are still visible in the older streets in Hobart. Recently there has been a push from the city, and everything from the government, to establish a light rail network, designed to be fast , efficient and environmentally friendly, along the existing tracks in North South corridor; to relieve the frequent disruption of traffic in the Hobart CBD. The main arterial roads in the city area, Brooker Highway to Glenorchy and the northern suburbs, the Tasman Bridge and Bowen bridge over the river Rosny and the eastern shore. However, there is a water taxi operating from the eastern shore of Hobart that provides an alternative to the Tasman Bridge. Hobart served by Hobart International Airport with flights to / from Melbourne (Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar Airways and Tiger Airways Australia); Sydney (Qantas, Tiger and Virgin); Brisbane (Virgin); Perth (Virgin); Gold Coast (Tiger Airways); and Adelaide (Jetstar) .The smaller Cambridge Aerodrome mainly serves small charter companies that offer local tourist flight. Any new international flights to Asia and New Zealand, and any new domestic flights to Darwin and Cairns have been proposed. A second court, possibly to be built over the next 15 years, would help with the growing number of passengers to Hobart. Hobart Control Tower can be renovated and fitted with new radar and airport parking can be further extended. In addition, new plants built just outside the airport. A new service station, hotel and daycare centers have already been built and the road leading to the airport has been maintained and re-sealed. In 2016, work began on a 500-meter extension of the existing line in addition to a $ 100 million upgrade of the airport. The runway extension is expected to allow international flights to land and increase air traffic Antarctica. The upgrade was funded in part by a promise during the 2013 federal election by Abbott government.
