1969-1999 Oberon-class submarine of the Royal Australian Navy

HMAS Onslow (SS 60 / SSG 60) was one of six Oberon class submarines operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The submarine was named after the town of Onslow, Western Australia, and Sir Alexander Onslow, with the boat's motto and emblem derived from Onslow family heritage. Ordered in 1963, Onslow was established in late 1967 by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Scotland, which was launched almost a year later, and the mission of the RAN in late in 1968. Although never involved in war, there were three major incidents in Onslow career. The first occurred in 1972, when a disgruntled sailor who disobeyed orders caused the submarine to dive to almost double her safe operating depth. As a result of changes in the RAN Submarine Service from being able to "conscript" each sailor submarine service only volunteer .. The general view of a number of submariners who served on the Onslow during the early 1970s is that this event does not happen .the second happened in 1981 when carbon monoxide emissions from the diesel generators filled submarine, resulting in the death of a sailor. The third was a controversial line-crossing ceremony in 1995, which resulted in limitations on similar ceremonies aboard the RAN ships. During his career Onslow first conventionally powered submarine to be equipped with anti-ship missiles, and managed wargame "sink" a seven-ship flotilla during training Kangaroo 3 1980 US supercarrier USS Carl Vinson at RIMPAC 1998.Onslow was decommissioned in 1999 and was presented to Australian National Maritime Museum, where she preserved as a museum ship. ....
