Gyumri (Armenian: Գյումրի, pronounced [ɡjumɾi]), is an urban local community and the second largest city in Armenia, which serves as the administrative center of Shirak Province in northwest part of the country. In the late 19th century, when the city was known as Alexandropol, was one of the largest cities in the Russian-ruled Eastern Armenia with a population similar to that of Yerevan. It was named Leninakan during the Soviet era. The city's population grew over 200,000 before the 1988 Spitak earthquake, when it was devastated. As of the census of 2011, the city had a population of 121,976, down from 150,917 recorded in the census of 2001. Gyumri is the seat of the pin Shirak of the Armenian Apostolic Church. ....
