About Galán

mountain in Argentina

Cerro Galán is a caldera in Catamarca in Argentina. It is one of the largest exposed calderas in the world. It is part of the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, found one of several volcanic belts in South America. It is one of several major systems in the central caldera volcanic zone, some of which are grouped in Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex. Volcanic activity at Gala is the indirect result of subduction of Nazca Plate in South America plate, and involves the infiltration of melts into the crust and the formation of secondary magmas which after storage in the crust produces dacitic to rhyodacitic rocks of volcanic erupted. Galán was active between 5.6 and 4.51 million years ago, when it generated a number of ignimbrite called Toconquis group that crop out mainly west of the caldera. The largest outbreak of Galán was 2.08 ± 0.02 million years ago and was the source of Galán ignimbrite, which covered the surrounding caldera with volcanic material. The volume of this ignimbrite is estimated to be about 650 cubic kilometers (160 cu mi); After this outburst much less ignimbrite eruption took place and currently two hot springs are active in Caldera. ....
