Fremantle () is a major Australian port city in Western Australia, located at the mouth of the Swan River in Perth metropolitan area. Fremantle Harbor serves as the port of Perth, the state capital. Fremantle was the first area settled by the Swan River colony in 1829. Fremantle is home to Western Australia's largest working port. Inner Harbor in Fremantle itself handles almost all container trade for the state, as well as export cattle imports motor vehicles and cargo. Located fifteen kilometers south of Fremantle, at Kwinana, the outer harbor of Australia's largest bulk cargo port, handling a variety of bulk products, from cereals to LPG.The city's western terminus of the direct, electrified passenger rail service from Perth CBD. Fremantle was the starting point for the railways in the metropolitan area of Perth, the Fremantle railway line is the starting point of the first railway in 1881 to Guildford. Major roads, Stirling Highway, Canning Highway and Leach Highway connect Fremantle to Perth CBD. Passenger ferries operate from the port, traveling to Rottnest Island, 22 km off the coast of the Indian Ocean and up the river to the Perth city center. Fremantle is free Central Area Transit (CAT) bus services are popular and convenient way to get around, with two services linking major points in the city and Fremantle's inner suburbs.
