About Fort Queenscliff

historic commonwealth heritage site in Queenscliff VIC

Fort Queen Victoria, Australia, is from 1860, when an open battery was constructed on Shortland Bluff to defend the entrance to Port Phillip. Fort, which underwent extensive renovation in the late 1870s and 1880s, became the headquarters of a major chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Its garrison included volunteer artillery, engineers, infantry and naval militia, and it was staffed as a coastal defense installation continuously from 1883 to 1946. The other fortifications and armor around the heads was completed in 1891, and together they made the Port Phillip one of the most heavily defended ports in the British Empire. The first Allied shot of World War were fired when a gun at Fort Nepean shot across the bow of the German freighter Palatinate, as she tries to escape by sea. The order to fire came from Fort Queenscliff. The same weapons, with another dish, also shot the first Allied shot of World War II. By 1946 coastal artillery was obsolete and Fort became the home of the Army Command and Staff College. After three service Colleges combined in the Australian Defense College in Canberra became the base for Army Soldier Career Management Agency in 2001. Fort Queen is located in the Borough of Queenscliffe, some 106 km from Melbourne, on the western side of the entrance to Port Phillip. It occupies an area of 6.7 hectares at an altitude known as the Short Bluff and overlooking the fairways leading to Melbourne and Geelong. The fort is an excellent example of the defense that existed around the coast of Australia from colonial times until the end of World War II. Major restoration has been accomplished at Fort Queens in recent years, including the recovery and reconstruction of part of the original weapons, restoration of historic buildings, and the development of a comprehensive indoor displays and archives center. Fort Queens has been classified by the National Trust and in the Register of the National Estate. A museum was established at Fort Queenscliff in 1982 to demonstrate the importance of the Fort at the local, state and national context and provide a center for historical research. ....
