The Embalse nuclear power plants (Spanish: Central Nuclear Embalse) is one of three operational nuclear power plant in Argentina. It is located on the south shore of a reservoir on the Rio Tercero, near the city of Embalse, Córdoba, 110 km south-southwest of Cordoba. The plant is a CANDU Pressure heavy water reactor (PHWR). It uses natural uranium (ie 0.72% of 235U) and uses heavy water for cooling and neutron moderation. It has a thermal output of 2109 MWt and generates 648 MWe electricity, with a power of about 600 MWe, supplying almost 4.5% of the production of the Argentine Interconnection System (2005). Moreover, Embalse produce cobalt-60 radioisotope, which is used in medicine (cancer therapy), and industrial applications. Argentina is one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of this isotope in the world, along with Canada and Russia. Embalse was founded in 1974 and began operations in 1983 (first critical March 13, 1983 declared commercial January 20, 1984). It was built by an Italian-Canadian consortium formed by AECL, as the "turnkey" supplier of the core part, and Italimpianti, the "turnkey" supplier of the conventional portion.On December 31, 2015, the plant was taken offline, after completed its first cycle of about 30 years. 1 September 2016 had to plant the last two of the four steam generators, basic elements for life extension of the plant. The facility renovated to supply power for another 30 years: replacement of four steam generators, one of the most important steps.
