Eisenerz (German pronunciation: [aɪ̯zn̩ˌʔeːɐ̯t͡s]; "iron ore") is a market and the old mining town in the Austrian province of Styria, 68 mi (109 km). N. W. Graz by rail. Pop. (2001) 6400. It is located in the deep Erzbach Valley, dominated on the east by Pfaffenstein 1871m (6140 ft), on the west by the Kaiser Schild 2084 m (6830 ft), and in the south of the Erzberg 1465 m (5030 ft). It has a medieval fortified church, a Gothic building was founded by Rudolf of Habsburg in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th century.At the turn of the last century Erzberg (Ore Mountains) furnished so rich ore that it mined in the open air rock , in the summer months. There is documentary evidence of the mines have been developed as far back as the 12th century. They offered employment to two or three thousand hands in the summer and about half as many in the winter, and provided some 800,000 tons of iron per year. During World War II, a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp here. It provided slave labor for the local economy. Eisenerz was connected to mines at Erzberg Railway, a fatty piece of engineering fourteen miles (21 km) long, constructed Abt rack-and-pinion system. It passed through pastoral scenery, before descending Vordernberg, a center for the hardware store is on the south side of the Erzberg. Eisenerz possessed then further twenty five furnaces, which produce iron, in particular steel, of high quality. Today Erzberg is the home of motocross races.A few miles northwest of Eisenerz stands Leopold Stein Castle and Leopold Stein Lake.
