Durres (Albanian pronunciation: [you: rəs]) is the second most populous city in Albania. The city is the capital of the surrounding Durres County, one of 12 constituent counties in the country. Through the air, it is 165 kilometers (103 miles) northwest of Sarande, 31 km (19 miles) west of Tirana, 83 km (52 miles) south of Shkoder and 579 km (360 miles) east of Rome. Located on the Adriatic Sea, is the nation's oldest and economic and historical center. The city was founded by the ancient Greek colonists from Corinth and Corfu under the name Epidamnos around the 7th century BC on the coast of the Illyrian taulantii. Later known as Dyrrachium, it essentially developed into significant, because it was an integral part of the Roman Empire and its successor the Byzantine Empire. Via Egnatia, a continuation of the Via Appia, began in the city and led over the interior of the Balkans to Constantinople in the east. During the Middle Ages the question of Bulgarian, Venetian and Ottoman empires. After the Albanian Independence, the city served as the capital of the principality of Albania for a short time. Then it was annexed by the Kingdom of Italy and Nazi Germany between the wars. The city experienced a sharp expansion in demographics and economic activity during communism in Albania. Durres served by the port of Durres, one of the largest on the Adriatic Sea, which connects the city to Italy and other neighboring countries.
