Dilijan (Armenian: Դիլիջան) is a spa town and urban local community in Tavush Province of Armenia. Commonly called Armenian Switzerland or the Little Switzerland of the locals, it is one of the most important cities in Armenia, located in Dilijan National Park. The forest and reclusive city is home to numerous Armenian artists, composers and filmmakers and have some traditional Armenian architecture. The Sharambeyan street in the center, has been preserved and maintained as an "old town", complete with artisan workshops, a gallery and a museum. Hiking, mountain biking and picnicking are popular recreational activities. As of the census of 2011, Dilijan has a population of 17,712, down from 23,700 reported in the 1989 Census. Currently, the city has an approximate population of 16,600 by 2016 official estimate. The Armenian government plans to turn Dilijan into a regional financial capital, starting with the relocation of a large part of the Central Bank to Dilijan in 2013.Dilijan is currently the fastest growing urban area in Armenia. .... Dilijan is connected to the central Yerevan and Armenia through the motorway M-4. The city is an important connection point between the capital Yerevan and northeastern Armenia reaches the border with Azerbaijan. The 2.25 km long Dilijan tunnel is part of the M-4 motorway. The town has a railway station opened in the late 19's.
