Dandenong (usually only Dandenongs) is a set of low mountain ranges, rises to 633 meters at Mount Dandenong, about 35 km (22 mi) east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The ranges mostly consists of rolling hills, valleys and steep ravines ridden covered with thick temperate rain forest, primarily of high rowan tree and dense ferny undergrowth. After European settlement in the region, the area as a major source of timber for Melbourne. The ranges were popular with day-trippers from the 1870s onwards. Much of the Dandenongs protected parks as early as 1882 and 1987, these parks were merged to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which is then expanded in 1997. The range will light to moderate snow fall a few times, in most years, usually between late winter and late spring. Today Dandenongs is home to over 100,000 residents and is popular with visitors, many of whom stay for the weekend at various B & Bs throughout the region.
