Coober Pedy () is a town in northern South Australia, 846 km (526 mi) north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. In the 2016 Census, there were 1,762 people in Coober Pedy (government suburbs). Of these, 962 were men and 801 women. There were 302 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people made up 17.1% of the population. The city is sometimes called "opal capital of the world" because of the amount of precious opals are mined there. Coober Pedy is known for its underground homes, so-called "canoes", which is being built in this manner due to the scorching daytime heat. The name 'Coober Pedy' comes from the local Aboriginal term cup-piti, which means' boys' waterhole '.The first Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; Since then, the city has supplied most of the world's gem quality opal. Coober Pedy today rely as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide society with jobs and sustainability. The city is served by daily bus services from Adelaide by Greyhound Australia. The Ghan train serves the city via Manguri Siding, 42 kilometers (26 miles) from Coober Pedy, which is served by trains once a week in each direction. Passengers on The Ghan usually not allowed to rise in Manguri if they do not have predetermined transport due siding insulation and extreme cold at night.Coober Pedy is a gateway to the outback communities in Oodnadatta and William Creek, both located on the Oodnadatta Track. There is a twice-weekly mail run from Coober Pedy to these communities and other outback farms.
