About Cerro El Cóndor

stratovolcano

Cerro El Cóndor is a stratovolcano in Argentina. Cerro El Cóndor is a remote peak in the Argentine Puna de Atacama. As such, it was probably the last major 6000m + peak in the Andes mountains to climb, the summit reached an altitude of 6,400 meters (21,000 feet). Mount the form of a solid (covering an area of 281 square kilometers (108 sq mi)) constructed of two separate volcano; Edifice the older form parts of the northern and eastern edges which are cut scarps interpreted as caldera residues. The top region is formed by the newer building, and has a series of craters with diameters of 100-350 m (330 to 1.150 ft) and a cover of volcanic material and slag. Also part of the newer phase is extensive lava flows forming the Western and parts of the eastern and southern slopes and reach distance of 17 km (11 mi) from summit.Surrounding volcano include Condorito (which is considered a part of the old El Cóndor volcano), Falso Azufre and Laguna Escondida that have limited the scope of the El Condor's lava flows. The volcano rises in Laguna Amarga Caldera, and an older mafic monogenetic volcano located north of El Cóndor.Radiometric dating has given ages of 2.89 to 2.67 million years ago to 0.13 to 0.02 million years ago, the volcano developed two phases. The older group ages obtained on Condorito and older building, while the ages 130,000 years ago and younger comes from the younger building and lava flows; some of these dates have high uncertainty (a young age is 20,000 ± 30,000 years ago from the western flank) and Holocene eruptions in the top region are possible. Currently Cóndor considered a dormant volcano with potential for future business, and while the great distances volcano reduce any danger to any future pyroclastic eruptions can affect air traffic across the region and east of it.Cerro El Cóndor is part of the Central Andes volcanic zone along with about 110 other quaternary volcanoes and is located in the southern part of volcanic zone; second volcanic zones in the Andes is Northern Volcanic Zone, Southern Volcanic Zone and Austral Volcanic Zone. The history of volcanic activity is poorly known for most of these volcanoes because of the lack of dating; only a few historical eruptions have been recorded, such as an outbreak of Ojos del Salado in 1993.The volcano has erupted trachyandesite and trachydacite in the later stages of activity after a scene with andesitic to dacitic eruption. The stones define a potassium-rich calc alkaline suite. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
