Cafayate (Spanish pronunciation: [kafaʒate]) is a city located in the central zone of the calchaquí valleys in the province of Salta. It sits 1,683 meters (5522 ft) above mean sea level, at a distance of 189 kilometers (117 mi) from the city of salt and 1.329 km (826 mi) from Buenos Aires. It has about 12,000 inhabitants (2001 census [National Institute of Statistics and Census of Argentina]). The city is an important tourist center for exploring Calchaquies Dalarna, and because of the quality and originality of the wines produced in the area. The largest golf course in South America, on 240 acres (0.97 km2), is currently being developed just outside the center at La Estancia de Cafayate. The city was founded in 1840 by Manuel Fernando de Aramburu, at the site of a mission. In 1863 Cafayate Department was created, of which Cafayate is the capital. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
