The Bulahdelah Tornado was an intense tornado that occurred near the town of Bulahdelah (100 km (62.1 mi) north-northeast of Newcastle), New South Wales, January 1, 1970, and is believed to be the most destructive tornado ever recorded in Australia. It is thought to have reached the F4 or F5 on the Fujita intensity scale; However, no official rating made public.The tornado left a damage path 22 kilometers (14 miles) long and 1-1.6 kilometers (0.6-1 mi) wide through Bulahdelah State Forest. It is estimated that the tornado destroyed over a million trees. A caravan was destroyed and a two-ton (2000 kg) tractor was lifted up into the air, landing upside down. The tornado was reported by witnesses as a swirling black cloud surrounded by flying debris, and produce a thunderous roaring sound. The weather system that produced the tornado was a classic setup for violent tornadoes, something rare outside the United States, Canada, Argentina, Bangladesh, and adjacent areas in India. ....
