Brisbane ((listen)) is the capital and the most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane metropolitan area has a population of over 2.5 million, and Southeast Queensland conurbation centered on Brisbane, covering a population of more than 3.6 million. Brisbane central business district is on the historical European settlement and is located in a peninsula Brisbane River, approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from its mouth at Moreton Bay, an inlet of the coral sea. The Moreton Bay penal settlement was established in 1824 in Redcliffe, 28 kilometers (17 mi) north of the central business district, but was soon abandoned and moved to North Quay in 1825, opening for free settlement in 1842. Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony New South Wales 1859 during World war II, Brisbane played a central role in the Allied campaign and served as the headquarters of the Southwest Pacific for the United States Army General Douglas MacArthur.A diverse city with 32.2% of the metropolitan population is foreign-born, is Brisbane is classified as a global city, and ranks high in the ratings of liveable cities. Brisbane is known for its distinctive Queen architecture that forms a large part of the city's architectural heritage. The city is famous for its food brunches, outdoor dining and rooftop bar scene. Brisbane was also the origin of the Anzac Day tradition through the works of Canon David John Garland. A hub, Brisbane is served by a large suburban rail network, popular bus and ferry networks and Australia third busiest airport and the port. Brisbane is a popular tourist destination, which serves as a gateway to the state of Queensland, in particular to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, which is home to many popular surf beaches, located just south and north of Brisbane, respectively. Transportation in Brisbane

Brisbane has an extensive transportation network in the city, as well as links to regional centers, interstate and to overseas destinations. Like all Australian cities, is the most popular means of transport private car. Public transport provided by train, bus, and ferry and coordinated by Translink, providing a uniform ticket and electronic payment system (known as 'go card') for South East Queensland. The region is divided into seven zones price radiating outwardly from Brisbane central business district (CBD), with Brisbane congested area covered by the zones 1-3.
