Bendigo is a city in Victoria, Australia, located near the geographic center of the state and about 150 kilometers (93 miles) northwest of the state capital, Melbourne. As of June 2018, Bendigo had an urban population of 99,122, making it the fourth largest inland city in Australia and the fourth most populous city in the state. It is the administrative center for the City of Greater Bendigo, covering both the urban area and remote areas spanning an area of around 3,000 km2 (1158 sq mi) and over 111,000 people.The discovery of gold in the ground in Bendigo in 1850 made it one of the most significant Victorian era boom towns in Australia. News of the findings intensified the Victorian gold rush, as an influx of migrants to the city from around the world within a year and convert it from a sheep station to a large settlement in the recently proclaimed the colony of Victoria. When the alluvial gold had broken out, the mining companies set up to exploit the rich underground quartz reef gold. Since 1851, approximately 780,000 kilograms (25 million troy ounces) of gold extracted from Bendigo's gold mines, making it the highest producing Goldfield in Australia in the 19th century and the largest gold mining economy in eastern Australia. It is also known for its Victorian architectural heritage. Bendigo is connected via Calder Freeway to Melbourne, which is less than two hours by car. The remaining portion of the highway nearest Bendigo has been upgraded to dual carriageway standard ensures that motorists may travel up to speeds of 110 km / h (68 mph) for most of the journey. Many other regional centers are also linked to Melbourne via Bendigo, making it a gateway city in the transport of raw materials and materials from northern Victoria and the Murray to the Port of Melbourne and beyond. Bendigo serves as a main rail hub for northern Victoria, which is at the intersection of several lines including the Bendigo line running south to Melbourne and lines running north, including Swan Hill, Echuca and Eagle Hawk Inglewood lines. The city is also served by several taxi services. Trams in Bendigo has historically operated an extensive network as a form of public transport, but the remnants of the network reduced to a tourist service in 1972. Short trials of commuter tram was held in 2008 and 2009 with a bit of traveling. The second, "take a tram," proved to be more successful, run twice as long as the previous trial. At the end of "take a tram" program, the number of passengers increased and increased. But because of the lack of government subsidies or support, the program ended.Bendigo served by Bendigo Airport, which is located in the northern part of the city on the Midland Highway. The Bendigo airport strategic plan approved in 2010 for the proposed infrastructure upgrades including runway extension and buildings to facilitate greater plan and the possibility of regular services from major cities in other states. In 2016 Bendigo Airport was upgraded with a new taxiway system, new lighting and a new 1.6-km north-south runway.
