About Bangkok

Capital of Thailand

Bangkok is the capital and most populous city in Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometers (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River Delta in central Thailand and has a population of over eight million, 12.6 percent of the population. Over fourteen million people (22.2 percent) lived in the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region at the 2010 census, making Bangkok the nation's primate city dwarfing Thailand's other urban centers in both size and importance to the national economy. Bangkok has its roots in a small trading post during the Ayutthaya in the 15th century, which eventually grew to become the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin 1782. Bangkok was at the center of the modernization of Siam later renamed Thailand in the late 19th century when the country is facing pressure from the West. The city was at the center of Thailand's political struggle in the 20th century, when the country abolished the absolute monarchy was adopted constitutional rule, and underwent numerous coups and several rebellions. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s, and now exert a significant impact on Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society. The Asian investment boom in the 1980s and 1990s led many multinational corporations to locate their regional headquarters Bangkok. The city is now a regional force in finance and business. It is an international hub for the transportation and health care, and has developed into a center for art, fashion and entertainment. The city is known for its street life and cultural landmarks, as well as its red light district. Grand Palace and Buddhist temples including Wat Arun and Wat Pho is in contrast with other tourist attractions such as nightlife venues Khaosan Road and Patpong. Bangkok is one of the world's top tourist destination, and has been named the world's most visited city consistently in many international rankings. Bangkok's rapid growth, combined with a bit of urban planning has resulted in a haphazard cityscape and inadequate infrastructure. An inadequate road network, despite an extensive highway network, together with significant private car use, has led to chronic and crippling congestion, which caused severe air pollution during the 1990s. The city has turned to public transport in an attempt to solve the problem. Five rapid transit lines are now in operation, with several systems under construction or planned by the national government and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. .... Learn more at Wikipedia

Transportation in Bangkok

While Bangkok's canals historically served as an important transportation has long ago surpassed the importance of land traffic. Charoen Krung Road, the first to be built by western techniques, ended in 1864. Since then, the road network greatly expanded to accommodate the sprawling city. Complex elevated motorway network will help attract traffic to and from the city center, but Bangkok's rapid growth has put a strain on infrastructure and congestion have plagued the city since the 1990s. Although rail transport was introduced in 1893 and trams served the city from 1888 to 1968, it was only in 1999 that Bangkok's first system for rapid transit began operations. Older systems of public transport includes an extensive bus network and boat services are still operating on the Chao Phraya River and two canals. Taxis are shown in the form of cars, motorcycles and "tuk-tuk" auto rickshaws. Bangkok is connected to the rest of the country through the national road and rail networks, as well as domestic flights to and from the city's two international airports. Its centuries-old maritime transport of goods is still done through Khlong Toei Port. BMA is largely responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of the transport network and through its Planning and Traffic and Transportation Department. But many separate agencies are also responsible for the individual systems, and much of the transport-related policy planning and financing contributed to the national government.
