Ballarat is a city located on Yarrowee River in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. The city has a population of 105,471.In terms of population Ballarat is the third largest inland city in Australia. Just a few months after Victoria was granted separation from the state of New South Wales, the Victorian gold rush turned Ballarat from a small sheep station a big deal. Gold was discovered August 18, 1851 and the news quickly spread rich alluvial areas where gold can be easily extracted. Unlike many other gold boom towns, Ballarat field experienced sustained high gold returns for many decades, as evidenced today in the city's rich architecture. The city is known for the 1854 tax revolt known as the Eureka rebellion. In response to this event, the first male suffrage was instituted in Australia and as such the Eureka interpreted by some as the origins of democracy in Australia. The rebellion symbol, the Eureka Flag, has become a national symbol and is held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka in Ballarat. Proclaimed a city in 1871, continued its prosperity until late in the 19th century, after which its importance in relation to both Melbourne and Geelong quickly faded with softly gold mining. It has endured as an important regional center host the rowing and kayaking events from the Summer Olympics in 1956. It is the commercial capital of the Central Highlands and its largest city and a major tourist destination. Ballarat is renowned for its history, culture and its well-preserved Victorian-era heritage, with much of the city subject to the heritage overlay.
