Bairnsdale () is a city in east Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Gunaikurnai people are the traditional owners of Gippsland. There are about 3000 Gunaikurnai people and territory includes coastal and inland to the southern slopes of the Victorian Alps. Gunaikurnai people consists of five major risks. The estimated population in Bairnsdale town was 15,411 in June 2018. The city is a major regional center in eastern Victoria along with Traralgon and sales and commercial center for East Gippsland region and the seat of local government for the Shire of East Gippsland. Bairnsdale first proclaimed a shire July 16, 1868 it was declared as a city July 14 1990.The origin of the town's name is uncertain. It was possibly Bernisdale, with "Bernisdale" is derived from "Bjorn valley or glen", suggesting Viking origin Skye Village. Legend has it that Macleod was so impressed by the large number of refugee children, children of his stockmen, he called it Bairnsdale, or "valley of the children" .In 1876 Bairnsdale Shire, who went to become one of the largest in Victoria in 1880 century, was led out of the administrative chaos of the former shire accountant and shipping agent Herman Bredt. He had also worked as a mine manager for the nearby Sons of Freedom mine. German born Bredt was the father of Bertha Bredt who married the famous poet Australia and writer Henry Lawson. Before that, she worked at Bairnsdale hospital. During this period, the Main Street fashioned but unsealed thereby causing substantial problems with dust in summer and mud in winter. Bairnsdale established a reputation as a marketing and trading center for the vast rural areas in East Gippsland and this has been helped by the development of the excellent road system, a good rail service, and to some extent steamer and air. 1880 was seen as the 'Golden Age' of steamer traffic on the rivers and Bairnsdale was seen as one of the great colonial ports. Brick Bairnsdale train station was opened in 1890 with other platforms and infrastructure will be completed at the same time. The contractor R. Kreokel won the contract for the work to be performed for the amount of ₤ 2,322.Shipping services from Bairnsdale to metropolitan areas related to railways as local primary producers were able to send their goods to market important center of Melbourne.
