Ashtarak (Armenian: Աշտարակ), is a city and urban local community in Aragatsotn Armenia, located on the left bank of Kasagh River along the gorge, northwest of the capital, Yerevan. It is the administrative center of Aragatsotn. Ashtarak is an important junction of roads Yerevan-Gyumri-Vanadzor rectangle. The city plays an important role in the national economy and cultural life of Armenia through several industrial companies and cultural institutions. It has been developed as a satellite city of Yerevan. The nearby village of Mughni is part of Ashtarak municipality. As of the census of 2011, the population of the city was 18,834. Ashtarak is a satellite in Yerevan and in connection with the capital by Ashtarak highway. M-1 motorway connects Ashtarak in northwestern Armenia, including the city of Gyumri, while the M-3 motorway linking the city with the north-eastern Armenia to the Georgian border.
