Areni (Armenian: Արենի; previously Arpa) is a village in Vayots Dzor Province Armenia. It is best known for its wine production, although the majority of wine produced locally from the nearby village GetAp. Church of S. Astvatsatsin is the single nave two aisles domed Armenian church completed in 1321, and is situated on a plateau overlooking the Arpa River and Areni. It was designed by the architect and sculptor Momik which is most known for its high relief carvings at convent Noravank (located approximately six kilometers southeast from Areni). Also nearby are the 13th century ruins of Lord Tarsaitch Orbelian of Syunik palace, moved from Yeghegis to Areni during that time. The ruins of a 13th century bridge built by Bishop Sarkis in 1265-1287 is one kilometer northeast of the church. On the same site there are the remains of an old bridge. .... Learn more at Wikipedia
