Alice Springs (Eastern Arrernte: Mparntwe) is the third largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Known as Stuart 31 August 1933, the name Alice Springs given by surveyor William Whitfield Mills for Alice, Lady Todd (née Alice Gillam Bell), wife of telegraph pioneer Sir Charles Todd. Now colloquially known as Alice, or simply Alice, the city is located roughly in the geographical center of Australia. It is almost equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin.The area is known as Mparntwe to its original inhabitants, Arrernte, who has lived in the central Australian desert in and around what is now Alice Springs for thousands of years. Alice Springs had an urban population of 26,534 in June 2018, after having declined by an average annual growth rate of -1.16% from year to year over the past five years. The city's population accounts for about ten percent of the population in the northern Territory.The town straddles the usually dry Todd River on the north side of the MacDonnell Ranges. The surrounding region is known as the center of Australia, or the Red Center, a dry environment that consists of several different deserts. Transportation in Alice Springs
