Adaminaby is a small town near the Snowy Mountains northwestern Cooma, New South Wales, Australia, in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. The historic town of 301 people in the 2016 census is a trout fishing center and winter sports destination located at 1,017 meters (3,337 ft) above sea level. Economic life is based on tourism and agriculture-town acts as a service point for Selwyn Snow and Northern skifields. It is also a popular destination for horse riders, bush walkers, fly-fishermen and water sports enthusiasts as well as a base to show aspects of the snowy mountain Scheme.Adaminaby is one of the highest cities in Australia and snowfalls are frequent and often heavy during the winter. The historic Bolaro Station and scenic Yaouk Valley is located near the township and Charlie McKeahnie, said to be the inspiration for The Man from Snowy River, a poem by Banjo Paterson, lived and died in the district. Later wrote Nobel-winning author Patrick White of the city. Construction of nearby Lake Eucumbene made it necessary to re-position the original township (old) Adaminaby 1957. In times of drought, the original church, and relics of the old valley rise from under the water in the lake.
