Orbost is a historic tourist town in Lincolnshire East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, 375 kilometers (233 miles) east of Melbourne and 235 km (146 miles) south of Canberra, where the Princes Highway crosses the Snowy River. It is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) away from the surf and fishing the coastal town of Marlo on the coast of Bass Strait and 217 km drive to Mount Hotham Snow Resort. At the 2006 census, Orbost had a population of 2452. Orbost is the service center for primary industries of beef, dairy, and the sawmill. More recently, tourism has become an important and flourishing industry, is the largest city near several national parks that are between East access to either surf or snow, including the famous Snowy River National Park, the Alpine National Park, Errinundra National Park, Croajingolong National Park Cape Conran Coastal Park. The establishment of the Sailors Grave Brewery has also resulted in significant tourism to the area with its many festivals throughout the year. Orbost straddles the Princes Highway. The city was connected to Melbourne via Orbost railway in 1916 and operated until 1987, mainly carries timber and agricultural produce. At the beginning of the railways dedicated passenger trains ran but these ceased in the 1930s. The track infrastructure was dismantled in 1994. The line crossed a mixture of farmland, hills and wooded land. There are a number of bridges, including Stoney Creek Trestle Bridge, the largest of its kind in Victoria. Public transport services are provided to the city by V / Line, a coach bus service between Canberra and Bairnsdale, which runs three times a week.Orbost has a regional airport, Orbost Airport YORB (RBS).
