Neuquén (Spanish pronunciation: [newken]; Mapuche: Nehuenken) is the capital of the province Argentine Neuquén and Confluencia department, located in the Eastern Province. It occupies a strip of land west of the confluence of the Limay and Neuquén rivers that form the Rio Negro makes it a part of the micro Alto Valle del Río Negro. The town and its surroundings have a population of more than 340,000, making it the largest city in Patagonia. National Route 22 divides the city into two halves. Presidente Peron Airport is located eight kilometers (5.0 miles) from the city and serves regular flights to Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Comodoro Rivadavia, Rio Gallegos, Rio Grande, Ushuaia, San Martin de los Andes. The Tren del Valle city rail links with neighboring Neuquén Cipolletti.
